Live Performance
Ashleigh is the most versed in is performance photography, it is how she taught herself to use a camera. Getting into photography as a teenager, Ashleigh began attending as many all ages and 16+ shows as she could to access performers.
Bands recognized her skill early on and asked her to attend their shows as if she were an honorary member of their group. By the age of 23, she was known as a “rockographer” for her skill in documentation and agility in a crowd of concert-goers.
She discovered her favorite band The Coup while studying at SFSU and started photographing their shows. Boots Riley asked about sourcing a live image of band mate Silk-E that Ashleigh captured for the cover of their single “The Land of 7 Billion Dances.”
The image is a shining example of the energy evoked in Ashleigh’s live music photography. It’s a 35mm flash photograph that captures the movement of singer Silk-E as if she has multiple hands and her face feeling the power of music.
Performance photography by Ashleigh has also been on display at Blue Line Arts in Davis and David Brower Center in Berkeley. She shoots for SFSonic.com music reviews.
